i Paper column: Gen Z don’t buy rounds!

I recently answered a very interesting workplace dilemma in the i Paper…

The reader’s younger colleagues never offer to buy a round at the pub.

She feels that it’s always the millennials and older team members footing the bill, and she’s started to feel like a bottomless purse.

As an ageing millennial who probably made this faux pas too early in her career, I found this a juicy problem to dive into.

There could be a generational element at play here. Gen Z drink less than previous generations, and many have grown up splitting bills individually as the default. It genuinely might not have occurred to them that it’s expected, especially if they think it might be the company that’s actually paying.

The money angle is complicated too. While some people might believe the junior person with fewer responsibilities has more spare cash, others may think that the senior person is rolling in it.

Neither is necessarily true.

You can read more of my thoughts on this, including advice on what the reader can do in The i Paper column here.
