i Paper column: “employers worry I’ll get pregnant.”

It’s hard being a woman in the workplace these days.

There has been some progress, but the horror stories haven’t gone away.

I recently answered a reader question for The i Paper from a woman who suspects she is being passed over for jobs because employers are worried she’ll get pregnant as soon as she joins. It’s a lot to navigate on top of an already tricky job market.

Most people know that age and sex discrimination is unlawful under the Equality Act 2010, but it still happens. Sometimes subtly, and in ways that are incredibly hard to prove.

The same is true for people facing discrimination because of disability, race, or gender identity – but just because the law exists, doesn’t mean it always protects people.

If you suspect you’re facing discrimination, start by documenting everything – dates, conversations, feedback – as soon as it happens. You can also contact ACAS, who offer free, confidential advice and can help you understand your rights.
