So many of us have felt stuck in a job we hate.
My worst ever job was working in a factory over summer while I was at university. The work was monotonous, it was surprisingly lonely, and even though I knew it was temporary, I just couldn’t stick it out. I quit after a day, and went back for a second out of courtesy. Not exactly very resilient of me!
Most people don’t have that luxury. With a tricky job market and bills to pay, plenty of people are staying put in jobs they don’t enjoy for a lot longer than they’d like.
I was recently featured in Stylist Magazine sharing five ways to find purpose when you’re in that position.
The tip I feel most strongly about is this one about talking to people.
Not necessarily in a formal, corporate-event, work-the-room kind of way. Just reaching out to people who are doing interesting work – people you already know, or new connections on LinkedIn – and ask if they’d be happy to have a quick chat about what they do. No agenda, definitely not asking for a referral or a job. Just genuine curiosity about their career.
You gain insight into new roles and industries, you build confidence in having career conversations, and you never know what else might stem from it.
