It can be flattering to be given more responsibility at work. Who doesn’t want to think they’re doing a good job?!
But if you’ve been given more responsibility with no pay rise – that isn’t a promotion. It’s just more work.
It’s something I hear about a lot, especially at the moment. Extra responsibility gets packaged up as an exciting opportunity, or a sign that you’re valued. You might well be doing a great job – but if your wages don’t reflect the responsibility you’re carrying, something isn’t right – and you deserve to do something about it.
This is exactly what happened to a reader who wrote in to The i Paper career column this week.
They had been given more responsibility, more work, and even people to manage, but haven’t been given the pay rises to reflect this.
