The perils of hot desking

I’ve worked in a few places that use hot desking, and I realised pretty quickly that how it works in theory and how it works in real life can be two very different things.

In theory, it’s all flexibility, collaboration, and freedom ✨

In practice, it can mean territorially claiming the same desk every single day.

I was absolutely guilty of this. High heels neatly tucked under ‘my’ hot desk. Snacks secretly stashed in the drawer.

And occasionally… a silent simmering rage if someone dared to sit in my spot.

I really enjoyed contributing to this Metro article on the highs and lows of hot desking (and the surprisingly intense emotions it can bring out).

What have your experiences been with desk sharing? Love it? Hate it? Did you also end up seething if someone sat at your desk? (Just me?)
